It was not yet time for the train to arrive. Among the waiting passengers on the station platform, a gentleman walked back and forth, holding his young daughter’s hand. Suddenly, a commotion near the station door caught their attention. Several officers entered, escorting a handcuffed prisoner—a notorious criminal sentenced to twenty years in state prison.
The little girl stared at the man in both wonder and fear. His face was hardened and filled with sullen gloom. But then, her expression softened with compassion. Dropping her father’s hand, she fearlessly walked up to the prisoner. Looking up at him, she spoke a few quiet words.
At first, the man glared down at her with a dark, defiant look, and she quickly ran back to her father, frightened. But moments later, her courage brought her back to his side, closer than before. This time, the prisoner avoided her innocent gaze. A slight tremor passed over his hard face as her simple words reached his heart.
Her father called her back, and she walked slowly away, casting one last look of pity toward the man. Shortly after, the train arrived, and the prisoner boarded quietly without resistance.
A Changed Heart Behind Bars
During the journey and after his arrival at the prison, the once-defiant criminal was remarkably subdued. The officers noticed his calm demeanour and lack of rebellion.
In prison, long-term inmates were permitted to read by lamplight in the evenings. Guards observed this man spending countless hours studying the Bible. His transformation stirred curiosity among them, and eventually, one asked what had caused such a change.
The prisoner answered, “It happened back at the station. A little girl with long, shiny hair and innocent blue eyes walked up to me. She said something I couldn’t forget.”
The Words That Broke a Hardened Heart
The prisoner recounted, “She came up to me and said, ‘Man, I am sorry for you.’ I couldn’t believe it. There were tears in her eyes. Something inside me cracked, but I was proud, so I scowled at her. She got scared and ran back to her father. But then she came back. This time, she looked me straight in the eyes and said, ‘Man, Jesus Christ is sorry for you.’”
“Those words broke me. No one had spoken to me like that since my mother died. All the way to prison, I couldn’t stop thinking about her and the lessons she taught me as a child. I realized I had wasted my life, but I also knew there was still hope. I made up my mind that I would never rest until I found my mother’s God. And I did find Him, sir—He saved me! Jesus Christ saved me!”
Jesus Christ is Sorry for You
How true were the words spoken by that little girl: “Man, Jesus Christ is sorry for you.”
God’s Son proved His deep love and compassion for us when He left the glory of heaven to come to Earth. From the throne to the cross, He suffered and endured the wrath and judgment of God on our behalf.
“Christ died for our sins.”
Friend, as you read these words, can you say with faith in your heart, “Christ died for me”?
Death is the punishment for our sin, for the Bible says, “For the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23).
But Jesus, in His boundless love and grace, took the judgment we deserved. He drank the bitter cup of death so that we could receive the sweetness of His love and forgiveness.
“While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)
“The carnal mind is enmity against God.” (Romans 8:7)
“For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.” (Romans 5:10)
