We all know the fate of the Titanic. Her maiden voyage began with grandeur and optimism, but it ended in tragedy. On the night of April 14th, 1912, this “unsinkable” ship met an icy grave, taking nearly 1,600 souls with it. Among the passengers was John Harper, a preacher who spent his final moments sharing the hope of eternal salvation.
“A Beautiful Day Tomorrow”
As the Titanic sailed under a setting sun, two men stood on deck, admiring the evening. One remarked, “We’ll have a beautiful day tomorrow.” Yet for most passengers, that tomorrow was never realized.
This sobering reality reminds us of the Bible’s warning: “Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth” (Proverbs 27:1). Are you prepared for eternity if your tomorrow never comes?
Dreams Drowned in Tragedy
The Titanic’s designer, who perished with the ship, reportedly stood staring at a mural titled “The New World to Come” as the vessel sank. What a tragic irony that his dreams for the Titanic ended in hopelessness.
So many today chase worldly dreams, ignoring the eternal hope offered by God. The Bible teaches: “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23).
John Harper’s Final Mission
As the Titanic sank, John Harper clung to a piece of wreckage in the freezing waters. Nearby, another man struggled to stay afloat. Harper shouted, “Are you saved?” When the man replied “No,” Harper urged, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved” (Acts 16:31).
Even as the icy waters claimed him, Harper repeated this message to all who would listen. One of those he spoke to later testified that he had accepted Christ as Harper urged. He survived and declared himself to be John Harper’s last convert.
The Lifeboats’ Tragic Shortage
As the Titanic sank, the horrifying truth became clear: there weren’t enough lifeboats for everyone. The rich and poor alike faced the same fate, as they realized their desperate need too late.
Unlike the lifeboats, God’s salvation offers room for all. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). There is no shortage of grace for those who seek it.
Saved or Lost?
After the Titanic disaster, outside the White Star Line office in Liverpool, two boards were displayed: “Known to Be Saved” and “Known to Be Lost.” Families waited anxiously as names were added to one board or the other, knowing their loved ones were either saved or lost forever.
The same is true in eternity. There are only two eternal destinies: saved or lost. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8). Where will your name be written?
An Invitation for All
Unlike the limited lifeboats on the Titanic, God’s salvation is open to everyone.
“Whosoever will” may come (Revelation 22:17). Through Jesus Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, salvation is freely available to all who believe.
The story of John Harper and the Titanic teaches us a timeless truth. Life is uncertain, and tomorrow is not promised. Will you accept God’s invitation today and secure your place in eternity? The choice is yours. Do not wait until it is too late.
